The World of Wonder & Magic - ILM
From the early days of innovation by Georges Melies to the start of digital imagery in 2001: A Space Odyssey, fantasy has inspired awe in viewers of movies and television.
This “Reflection” is not on a movie but on a TV series about the movies. Special effects have been a part of the film industry from the beginning. Early work inspired new generations, not only in creating new effects but how to turn the idea through science into a reality.
Then in 1977, George Lucas released Star Wars. This movie took the over 80 years of innovation, put them in a blender, erased all the lines off the canvas and created a whole new paint & canvas! The story behind this explosion of doing the unthinkable has now been made into a TV documentary series “Light & Magic”.
Light & Magic showcases “Industrial Light & Magic” (ILM), a company formed by George Lucas to create the effects and story he created in Star Wars. The group, of almost outcasts, came together and did the impossible with little to no funds. The ultimate ‘Upcycling’ project.
Taking you behind the scenes, really behind the scenes as they were still being created from the script to the screen. Innovation, imagination, engineering, graphic artistry and camera technology all came together to create this new world of fantasy. Nothing seemed impossible. What happens when a community comes together and makes it possible.
Released on Disney +, this series is told by the people involved in creating the unthinkable, how they created the effects, and a look at what is coming in the future. The ultimate thinking outside the box.
